There are very few exercises to work this region. When they resume training, long distance runners frequently suffer from pain at the back of the leg. Since the heel hits the ground repeatedly, optimum flexion of the foot is required. Training on "cross country" races improves proprioception, thereby preventing the risks of spraining the ankles.
In fencing, the flexors of the foot on the front leg are also highly developed since the foot is in flexion position at each lunge.
