OBLIQUES AND QUADRATUS LUMBORUM

Beginners in bodybuilding generally find it difficult to make a distinction between working the oblique muscles and working the quadratus lumborum muscle.
The aim of this article is to clarify the subject a little.

OBLIQUE MUSCLES:
Inferior oblique External oblique
Looking at the two pictures above, the muscular fibres in the inferior and external obliques go from back to front.
As they contract, these muscles therefore bring their insertion points closer together.
In other words, they cause a rotation.
(Obviously, simultaneous contraction of both sides would cancel the effect)

Obliques
DANGER.
You are strongly recommended not to carry out rotations with a bar on the shoulders.
This causes dangerous rubbing of the intervertebral discs.
The previous exercise with the machine avoids this "load" on the spine.

QUADRATUS LUMBORUM:

Quadratus lumborum: On contracting, this muscle will also bring its insertion points closer together, causing a lateral flexion of the torso.
